According to this Los Angeles Times article, school districts across California are coping with the $5.3 billion budget cut with teacher layoffs and school closures. Some are even considering shortening the school year, a move that would be especially hard for children with tougher economic backgrounds, says U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
